From these lists, Nolan for me. Ive only seen 2 of those PTA films and the Nolan films I've seen are better, imo.
ReplyDeleteMemento, The Prestige, TDK...all fucking amazing.
Which two PTA films have you seen? I highly recommend that catch up on his other films. There is something unique and interesting in each one.
DeleteI do agree that though Memento, The Prestige, and TDK are all top notch films.
as of yesterday I've now seen The Master, Boogie Nights, and TWBB
DeleteDamn, this is really tough. In my mind, neither have made a bad film, but I'm inclined to go with PTA. Great match up though.
ReplyDeleteThey are in that rare group of directors who have not produced a single film that I did not like or love.
DeleteThere's no question for me here. Anderson hands down.
ReplyDeleteFor my money, Nolan has made two films that are of the same caliber as Anderson's work: The Dark Knight and Memento.
While I agree with Anderson pick, I would argue that the The Prestige is of Anderson's caliber as well. It plays even better upon re-watch.
DeleteTwo great directors. Both have made some amazing films.
ReplyDeleteI'm going with PTA. Nothing against Nolan but it's just that PTA really goes more out there with his work.
Both directors have taking big risks, but Anderson has really moved into Kubrick level territory with his last couple of films.
DeletePTA! PTA! PTA!
ReplyDeleteNolan is great. I love his movies... but PTA just finds ways to sink deep into character while Nolan (at least it seems) gets a bit too drawn into the commercializing on that idea. Imagine if Nolan directed There Will Be Blood or Punch Drunk Love (RUINED!!!)... but if PTA did Inception... hmmm... sounds interesting.
I don't think Nolan would ruin Punch-Drunk Love, but it would definitely be different. In fact, I am very curious to see what a Nolan comedy would look like. Keep in mind that not too many people liked Anderson's attempt at comedy with Punch-Drunk.
DeleteWow !! Two directors of my Two All-time Favourites. So this is going to be really hard but I think I have to go with my number 1. So, Nolan. He also has 3 films in my Top 20. PTA has none except TWBB but admittedly I had not seen anything else he did then. :) So, yeah. Nolan for me.
ReplyDeleteI am kinda surprised though that no one even mentioned Inception here in all this discussion.
Inception is a film that really divides people. There are some who think the film is too commercial without a lot of depth; and then there are those who praise Nolan for bringing such a mind-bending premise to a mainstream audience.
