Laughter is just what the doctor ordered

Sometimes you just need a good laugh. When work is stressful and bills pile up; when it’s cold and drab outside; when life throws you a curveball and when you’re just feeling blue, nothing can snap you out of the doldrums like a good funny movie. The problem is that finding movies that make you laugh isn’t always easy to do. Though many films fall under the comedy genre, some aren’t all that funny. You can pick up a movie from off the shelf, download it or watch it via Netflix or The Movie Network easily, but it’s laughter that’s often inaccessible. A good funny movie makes you laugh the first time and then someday makes you laugh again. What’s more, we laugh at different things at different times in our lives. The things we once found funny can change. For me, there are certain films that make me laugh again and again no matter how many times I see them. They’re not all side-splitting comedies. Some make me giggle, others make me laugh out loud here and there, and some make me smile and forget about everything else for a little while.

Since a good laugh is currently in order, I thought I’d list some of my favourite funny movies. These films consistently make me laugh and provide an escape from the not-so-funny business that can creep up in everyday life. What people find funny is a very subjective thing, and what I appreciate about writing these kinds of posts is that these lists show that we all laugh at different things and I love that.

So here’s a few of the funny movies that keep me laughing, in no particular order…

I watched P,T and A for the first time last night and was disappointed. there were a few parts but I've definitely seen funnier Steve Martin films..like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels..and funnier films in general, like some of the ones listed here.

    1. @Phips - that's cool. It's like I said in my post, we all find different things funny and I've talked to others who didn't find Planes... very funny either. Good call on 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.' Gosh, it's been ages since I've seen that film.

  2. Almost any of Kevin Smith's comedies is guaranteed to do the trick for me, especially 'Chasing Amy' and 'Mallrats.'

    1. Good call on 'Chasing Amy!' That is a good one. 'Mallrats' was on TV recently and I'm kicking myself for not stopping to watch it again.

  3. That's pretty much an incredible list though with Austin Powers, I would only pick the first 2 films. The third one sucked ass.

For comedies, I'd pick anything with Bill Murray like Caddyshack.

    1. Glad you approve, for the most part. Really - you didn't like Goldmember, eh? I admit it wasn't as good as the first two, but I laughed quite a bit.

I'd like to do a Bill Murray comedy marathon one day. I'll have to file that away for the future.

  4. Glad to see Extract listed here. I think it's really underrated. One of my surefire comedies is Kingpin.

    1. I loved 'Extract.' And I laugh more and more each time I see it. The crazy neighbour is so fantastic.

      'Kingpin' is great too.

  5. Team America is probably my fave comedy of all time. Austin Powers, Anchorman, Naked Gun, Mallrats, I'm also one of the ridiculous people that got some good laughs from Freddy Got Fingered.

    1. I have to admit that I've never seen 'Team America.'

'Freddy Got Fingered' you say...I may have to give it a second viewing because I honestly don't remember the much about the film.

  6. I am one of the few people who could not stand Anchorman, not looking forward to the sequel. Did not like Extract either come to think of it.

For me the list would be Old School, Coming to America, Knocked Up, Dumb and Dumber, Black Dynamite, and I'm Gonna Git You Sucka.

    1. i didnt like Anchorman at all the first time I saw. But I watched it a few years later and now its one of my fav. comedies. Maybe some time away and a rewatch could help?

I heard Extract was pretty poor as well.

    2. We'll go and see the Anchorman sequel together!

Really, not a fan of 'Extract.' It's one of the Jason Bateman comedies that I thought really worked. I thought the cast was great.

'Coming to America,' 'Knocked Up' and 'Dumb and Dumber' are great mentions. I still have to watch 'Black Dynamite.' Alright - this weekend it is.
