  1. Aaarrgh, this one is devastatingly difficult. Fiennes is incomparable when at the top of his game, but his filmography has a few clunkers. Whereas DDL works less, so he has the upper-hand there. I love Ralph more, but DDL by a hair.

  2. CS, you evil man. On the one hand, I've seen more movies with Ralph than Daniel (Ralph with 6, Daniel 3). But on the other hand, Daniel really impressed em with what I saw. Gah, I can't choose. But for now, I'm sticking with Ralph because of Schindler's List and Quiz Show.

  3. Daniel Day-Lewis.

He doesn't work that often, but when he does, there's no one better. He was the best thing about Gangs of New York, and his performance in The Last of the Mohicans is outstanding too. Then there is There Will be Blood, which, in my opinion, is one of the greatest performances ever!

I like Fiennes in stuff too. The Constant Gardner, Schindler's List and In Bruges in particular, but DDL wins here.

  4. Really tough. I love both of these guys. I mean Fiennes was perfect in Schindler's List and I really liked him in Red Dragon. I guess the final straw came down to Gangs of New York though. It's one of my favorite movies and Lewis pretty much took it to a whole new level. Going to go with DDL...but just barely.

  5. Daniel-Day Lewis. Though nothing against Ralph Fiennes, it's just that DDL played one of the greatest characters ever in Daniel Plainview.

  6. I don't think this one is difficult at all. I can't think of many actors who come close to Daniel Day Lewis' talent. I love Ralph Fiennes, but it's definitely DDL for me. His performances in There Will Be Blood, My Left Foot and Gangs of New York are a masterclass.

  7. @Andrew - DDL has played some truly larger than life characters. Yet I think people constantly forget how good Fiennes can be.

@MovieNut - Fiennes was stellar in both Schindler's List and Quiz Show. I would argue that his villain in Schindler's List is just as menacing as DDL's character in Gangs of New York.

@Andy - I agree that Day-Lewis was the best thing in Gangs of New York...really dislike that film. I also hear you on There Will Be Blood, a truly brilliant performance.

@Wes22 - I was not a fan of Red Dragon, prefer Manhunter instead, but I quite enjoyed Fiennes work in it.

@thevoid - Daniel Plainview is tough to beat. Fiennes has played some great characters but Plainview has reached iconic status in such a short time.

@Squasher - Day-Lewis definitely knows how to leave a lasting impression. His performance in My Left Foot is mesmerizing.

  8. Yeah...this one's no contest. I've dug Fiennes more and more over the years, but c'mon, this is DDL's by a mile.

  9. Dylan - I was originally thinking a Depp/DDL match up as they seem to have a strangle hold on the most iconic characters in the last decade. Who knows? Maybe that match up will see the light of day in the future.
