Black Dynamite Month

Recently The LAMB announced that they were bringing back their Movie of the Month feature. The LAMB is asking bloggers to watch this month's selected film, Black Dynamite, and write something related to the film. As a big fan of the film, I decided to post ten random things I love about Black Dynamite:

1. “Haha! I threw that s*** before I walked in the room!” – Hands down the best line of the movie!

2. Dynamite the ladies man – Black Dynamite not only beds three women at once, but the camera pans out to reveal that there are two more women passed out in the bed as well. Even James Bond has never been that successful with the ladies.

3. Gloria – I have been a fan of Salli Richardson-Whitfield ever since I saw her in Posse back in 1993. While she has several great moments in the film, I quite enjoy the way she inspects the girls to see if there is any relation to Dynamite.

4. Interrupting his Kung Fu – Many will quote the “how many times have I told you not to call here and interrupt my Kung Fu!” line which, in itself, is funny. Yet what makes this scene special for me is the guy on the ground who tries his hardest to escape Black Dynamite only to run into...Black Dynamite.

5. Cream Corn – I always enjoy Tommy Davidson’s work on In Living Color and I thought he did a great job as Cream Corn. From his "I'm Running Thangs" delivery to the foot chase that proceeds the line, Cream Corn is pure gold.

6. Shootout at Jimmy’s apartment – The music lets you know that there is going to be bad guys hidden inside. I also like how the car starts to roll away from the villain before he can fully get inside.

7. Jimmy’s death scene – Trying to be a gangster from the hood, yet speaking like a Shakespeare-trained thespian, Baron Vaughn is hilarious in his brief role as Black Dynamite’s brother Jimmy.

8. Anaconda Malt Liquor – What starts off as a spoof on the cheesy commercials of the era turns into one of the best sight gags in recent years.

9. Captain Kangaroo Pimp – Just the fact that they thought of having a Captain Kangaroo type character in the film is great.

10. Bullhorn’s Slap - It is a brief gag but man does it work well. I love that, instead of cutting the footage all together, the director just brings in another actor to finish the scene.

Be sure to stop by The LAMB this Saturday to see all the Black Dynamite related posts.

  1. I couldn't agree with you more on the #1 quote being the best line in the movie. The only line I quote more than that one is "Donuts don't wear alligator shoes."

  2. Love it! Also highly enjoyed the doughnut man killing ;)

  3. Awesome post, but then again, it's hard to go wrong with Black Dynamite!

    Such a hilarious film...
My whole family watched it and continuously quotes it.

One of my favourite scenes is when BD walks into the militants HQ without them knowing and the resulting confrontations.

Anyway, this reminded me that I have to finish my review for this film. So thanks for that...

Plus they've got a new cartoon and comic book!

The creator just did this panel a few weeks ago:

  5. I keep forgetting about the Captain Kangaroo character. Kills me when they cut to him.

The LAMBcast on BD ended up devolving into "list your favorite parts about BD!" I felt bad, but you can only call it brilliant so many times before it starts to become repetitive.

  6. @French Toast – Another line I love is when he says to Dr. Wu: “Your knowledge of scientific biological transmogrification is only outmatched by your zest for kung-fu treachery!”

@Castor – The doughnut man killing is hilarious. Still cannot figure out where he was hiding the weapon in that costume.

@Jack – What makes the confrontation at the militant HQ for me is when he tells the guy to “shut up when grown folks is talking.” How does one even comeback from a statement like that is said? I would be apologizing to if that was said to me.

@Anonymous – I heard about the cartoon but had no idea that they are doing a comic book as well. There is also talk of a sequel being in the works but I do not know if the script is finished yet.

@Fletch – Yep, there are only so many ways you can praise a film that you really enjoy. Looking forward to hearing what everyone on the LAMBcast picked as their top moments from the film.

  7. I ave had this in my Media Centre for quite a while but have never got around to watching it. You have piqued my interest again.

    Thanks CS

  8. @Custard – You should definitely give Black Dynamite a watch. It is a silly homage to the blaxploitation genre but the humour works extremely well.

  9. "sheee, you'll wake the other bitches."

I liked this but didn't find it quite as funny as say Dolemite. Now that's a classic!

  10. @Mike – Dolemite is in another category all together, as is Shaft, Superfly, Coffey, etc… No way Dynamite is surpassing those films. I seeing Black Dynamite being in the same grouping as films like Machete, Planet Terror, Undercover Brother, and Hobo with a Shotgun.

  11. I think my favourite part of the movie is when one of the minor characters speaks his stage directions before going into his lines. Brilliant!

I don't think I'm gonna have time to write anything on BD unfortunately, but I'm really interested in checking out all the other posts by LAMB members

  12. @Tom – Good call, I had forgotten about the stage direction scene.

  13. Black Dynamite is hilarious! Cream Corn! Noooo!

  14. @Ty - I hope the sequel can live up to the original.
